Hunting Still Life With Hare and Birds by Pieter Snyers (Circle), Oak Panelc. 1730-1740

This beautiful Hunting Still Life is painted in the circle of Pieter Snyers (1681-1752). Still lifes with hunting motifs became popular in Dutch art in the latter part of the seventeenth century, at a time when Dutch society grew wealthier and more refined. The motif of this painting is a catch after a day of hunt. A butterfly has landed on the thistle; some frogs are watching and surrounding a lonely snail, and two songbirds in the upper part of the panel.
