“The Stable door with Cow” by George Lance (1802-1864) Oil on Canvas. Size: 54cm x 49cm 77cm x 73cm framed Housed in a beautiful carved gilt frame George Lance was a still life and portrait painter. He was born in Essex. A considerable amount is known about him. Over four decades Lance’s reputation spread to America, Canada and Australia. During his lifetime, Lance was regarded as a worthy British successor to the great seventeenth and eighteenth century Dutch and Flemish still life painters. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the British Institute, as well as the Suffolk Street Gallery. He was 62 when he died. Ten years later, Christies auctioned the contents of his studio in 1873, where there was over 400 works on offer. He was a very popular and highly sought after artist by members of the aristocracy and wealthy business people of the time.
