“Together” by Washington DC based emerging artist Samantha Viotty, pulls together ideals of identity, society, memory and culture. Viotty’s work has aged into being indicative of the current political movement with Black Lives Matter. Her work has consistently examined societal issues as they have existed through history. Bringing the conversation to the viewer, challenging social norms and thus reimagining them through a different lens. The digital illustrations were created before the time of current political unrest with the Black Lives Matter movement, but help show the ever prevalent inequities in our society. Artist Statement: My artwork lives in a space that examines identity and social issues as they pertain to memory, history and popular culture. Death and loss have been an incredibly impactful aspect of my life and have formed my perspective on life. My work plays off of reproductions or recreations of already existing works and norms, challenging them and attempting to reimagine them from a different lens. I create digital illustrations as a way to re-envision the way I see the world. My work is a reflection of my identity as a Black Woman, highlighting people of color and using found images to reimagine representation. My process starts with an image that already exists that I feel connected to proceeded by layering, mixing, and digital collaging. I use color and block images to convey the messages within the portraits. The subjects of my work often do not have detailed faces. I invite the viewer to use their imagination by using the details in the setting, colors, and backgrounds to derive meaning. My work thus far has focused on aspects of intersectionality, particularly of race and gender, my black woman identity in the United States of America. My work aims to create a wide range of opportunities to view people of color (black men and women), to challenge the monolithic notions and stereotypes that society, popular culture, and the media have created. Sizes also available at 20×16 and 24×20. Framing options available. Inquire for pricing.
