Triangolo woollen carpet by Peter Shire for Memphis Milano collection A woollen carpet handcrafted by different Nepalese artisans. As the carpet is made by hand, there are slight variations in the dimensions of the single items. The lengthy manufacturing process starts with the shearing of the traditionally reared sheep. The wool is then spun and dyed, and the carefully selected wool fibres are washed. The knots used by the craftsmen is the Tibetan “Senneh”, different from the Persian and the Turkish one. The rug is realized in Yum quality. The carpets made in this way are brightly coloured, and each pattern is unique. The carpets may be made in different sizes on request, but will always be produced in the proportions shown in the catalogue. The product is purchased with authenticity certificate and guarantee stamp. Additional information: Designer: Peter Shire Year: 2018 Dimensions: W 180, H 270 cm Pricing: price does not include VAT Peter Shire was born in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, where he lives and works. He studied ceramics at the Chouinard Institute before opening his own studio in 1972. Inspired by Bauhaus, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Shire’s work aims to bridge the gap between art and industrial design. With his early works he transformed traditional teapot design into a sculptural construction of geometric shapes, edges and pastel enamels. His works attracted the attention of Ettore Sottsass, who invited him to collaborate with the Memphis Group, for which he designed two of the most iconic products: the Brazil table (1981) and the Bel Air armchair (1982). In the 1980s Shire began to produce furniture and objects in glass and metal. During the same years he worked in the design team of the American Institute of Architects for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and designed some public sculptures in Los Angeles and other cities in California. His work can be found in several museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the MAD Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Memphis is the great cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, Memphis turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond.
