Antique Victorian Etruscan Revival old cut diamond and black enamel bangle bracelet in rose gold, Europe, circa 1870. A treasure of the late 1800s, composed of a wide band with a central diamond and enamel geometri motif. The central motif is embellished with Old Mine cut diamonds and black enamel detailing, further decorated with micro granulation, chiseling, golden beads and applied scrolled filigree. The wide band is also rich in Etruscan motifs, with granulation and chiseled detailing of contrasting polished and textured gold, with a concealed hinged clasp fitting. Diamonds approximately 2 carats in total. Tested as gold, not marked. Dimensions: 6.1 x 4.9 cm (internal diameter measurements); 17.5cm (approximate internal circumference); 2.5cm (width of the band). Gross weight: 43.9g. Etruscan Revival jewelry reflects the fascination of Victorian era women with the Etruscans – an ancient people who lived on the west coast of Italy between 700-300 BC. The discovery of Etruscan tombs in the early 19th century inspired many Etruscan Revival jewelry collections in yellow gold, typically noted for granulation and applied filigree decoration, with tiny gold beads and twisted wires densely applied to the surface. Nobody had seen gold worked like that since the mysterious Etruscans had carefully buried the treasures with their dead. The secret to that fascinating granulation found on the Etruscan hoards was claimed to have been discovered by Fortunato Pio Castellani, who produced many replicas of archeological treasure finds using ancient techniques. His son, Augusto, continued his father’s tradition and added to the techniques with engraving and chasing, producing golden pieces with both matte and shiny surfacing detailed with corded wire, filigree, and granulation as well as Greek and Roman coins. The style spread through Europe and many famous jewelers used it to produce the elaborate jewelry the Victorians demanded. This item is in good condition, with marks and scratches consistent with general age and wear. Antique, period and vintage pieces, both signed and unsigned, are being offered as worn. Unless otherwise stated, all weights and quality factors have been graded as mounting permitted and using classic gemology.
