Akoya Pearl Necklace Three Strand by Tasaki Midcentury Magnificence

This Midcentury triple-strand 15″ Tasaki pearl choker features three rows of nearly flawless, impeccably matched, and highly lustrous cultured Akoya pearls that almost imperceptibly graduate in size from 5mm to 5.4mm. The inner-most strand holds 65 pearls; the center strand 68. and the outer strand is composed of 71 pearls for a total of 204. The silver clasp, which is hallmarked for both silver and Tasaki, is set with one 5.79mm central pearl surrounded by a halo of 7 smaller 4.5mm pearls. These extraordinarily high-quality pearls are a light creamy white. They display a soft pink overtone. They are simply magnificent. I have handled many fine pearls in my day and these are befitting of royalty. Though the strand is brief and suited only for the slenderest of necks, finer pearls you will not find. Nacre is the most most important defining quality of a pearl. This is the material created by the mollusk that gives pearls their “pearly” exterior. The thicker the nacre and the more blemish-free the surface, the more impressive the pearls. When the nacre is especially thick, the pearls may display a phenomenon known as orient; which is the prismatic display of light that seems to originate from deep within the pearl and slide across the surface. These fine pearls display a lovely orient. Tasaki was founded in the mid-1950s, The Tasaki company raises its own oysters in their own farms and the quality of their cultured Akoya pearls is —quite literally— second to none. It is difficult, then, to perform a “Mikimoto vs Takasi” challenge because the two luxury jewelers are different from one another. Mikimoto is iconic, classic. Takasi tends to take more design risks. They are seen in some circles as more fashion-forward, less old-school classic. That said, the necklace I present to you today is old-school perfection.
